With the Tango Mercurio Foundational Teacher Training
As part of our mission to build global community and social cohesion through tango dancing, we provide growth and development opportunities for both aspiring and existing tango teachers.
The Tango Mercurio Foundational Teacher Training program is based on a clear and effective teaching pedagogy refined and improved upon over more than a decade of conducting on-going tango classes of all levels in the DC area.
Aja Fenn, Tango Mercurio’s Artistic Director, will share with you her most intimate and pivotal discoveries about the art of teaching, while providing the space and support necessary for you to find your own unique teaching style. This program will advance your tango dancing, acquaint you with the many layers of tango, build your confidence and help you find your voice.

The 100 hour Tango Mercurio Foundational Teacher Training curriculum includes:
- Tango anatomy
- Advanced study of tango fundamentals and the four primary skill areas
- Our syllabus for beginners and why we do it that way
- Science and poetry of lesson sequencing: how to design and deliver inspirational, engaging and effective classes
- Teaching diagnostics and compassionate correctives for self and others
- The study of different learning styles: how to reach most learners, most of the time
- Tango for everyone: Working with injuries and limitations
- Teaching with a partner verses teaching alone
- Confidence-building through practice teaching time
- Finding yourself: We will hold a space and opportunity for you to find your own teaching style
- The business of tango and how to be a successful teacher and community builder
- Professional etiquette and protocol as part of a wider network of organizers and tango professionals
Length of training and time commitment: The Foundational Teacher Training program is 100 hours long (conducted over a period of 12 weeks). Participants must commit to three 2-hour sessions per week of a combination of: group training time, hands on teaching practice and assistance, and approximately 2 hours per week of private study and class preparation time. Group work will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.
Qualifications: Participants must be intermediate to advanced level in their primary role in improvised social tango, and advanced beginner to intermediate level in their secondary role. The latter includes the ability to successfully – but not necessarily perfectly – lead/follow the “caminata” (tango walk), “cruzada” (the cross) and ochos).

WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO BE A TEACHER?
This training is ideal for those who want to delve deeper into the study of Argentine tango to improve their own dancing and to deepen their connection to the global tango community. It's also for people who want to have a transformational experience through the growth that a challenge like this will inevitably foster.
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT STYLES OF TANGO, WHAT STYLE WILL THE TRAINING BE BASED UPON?
We believe that tango is like a language, spoken with as many different accents and dialects as there are people, and for this reason, we do not categorize our style by any broad stylistic name. One could say that tango is “reinvented” in every body type and partnership in each new moment. Our curriculum program prepares students for the reality of this diversity on the dance floor by imparting what we consider to be some of the most “universal” concepts and techniques in tango’s current stage of evolution, whilst preparing dancers to enjoy and adapt to different styles. If this answer isn’t satisfactory for you: The Foundational Teacher Training could be said to be working with “club style” tango which has been described as the style currently danced the most in the milongas of Buenos Aires. This style is sort of a “mish mash” of different styles. It combines many of the rhythmic characteristics and figures of “milonguero” style but with a more upright posture and independent axis, and an embrace that may loosen slightly during turns and pivots to allow the follower to rotate more freely (an influence of a style sometimes referred to as “tango salon”).
IF I TAKE THE TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM WILL I BE ABLE TO TEACH FOR TANGO MERCURIO?
The Tango Mercurio Foundational Teacher Training, like all of our teacher training programs, is not focussed on preparing graduates to join our teaching faculty, nor does it guarantee any such similar opportunity.
