Dec 11, 2010: The Global Milonga

The Global Milonga is an international alliance of tango dancers, organizers, and teachers celebrating the tango's innate ability to unite and transform. Through the miracle of online streaming audio and video, we dance to the same music at the same time, and see one another in real-time video over the internet. All partners donate 75% of ticket sales (or 100% of profits) to our environmental partner, Trees for the Future.

Brief History
The first Global Milonga took place on Dec. 12, 2009, a date chosen to coincide with National Tango Day in Argentina. It took place in 10 cities and 5 countries, and lasted for 21 hours. More than 50 people collaborated on its creation. Together, 974 tango dancers raised the equivalent of 72,005 trees in 5 currencies, across 9 time zones.

Planting Trees
Trees for the Future is a nonprofit organization developing community-based agroforestry projects in Africa, South America, and Asia. Their local teams plant trees at a rate of less than 10 cents per tree. Planting trees protects the environment and helps to preserve traditional livelihoods and cultures for generations.
