About the Artists

PHI LEE LAM
Phi Lee Lam is a queer Tango dancer and organizer who facilitates experiences at the intersection of artistic, somatic, and contemplative practice.

She is an immigrant from Singapore who has lived in several continents including Argentina where she first encountered tango danced by two queer women switching roles.

Since 2015, she has been studying with Carla Marano, Moira Castellano and tango artists of their generation. In 2014, co-founded the Queer Tango Club, later the Queer Tango Collective, Inc. where she provided safe spaces for women and LGBTQIA+ dancers; raised awareness of queer tango dancers by organizing public performances; and increased visibility of same-gender partner dancing on the social dance floor.

Today, she is invigorated by the possibilities of a new Tango culture and dance that is driven by those on the periphery of mainstream tango. In her workshops, she is finding new approaches and strategies for transmitting tango from a queer female perspective. As a performer she is interested in exploring the narrative of Tango and assumptions of viewership.

DIANA SUAREZ
Tango dancer and teacher since 2011, she lived in Buenos Aires for 10 years. She specialized in the "Sistema Dinzel", which works simultaneously the technique, musicality, expression, and improvisation of tango.

She taught at the University of Tango (C.E.T.B.A.), at the "Escuela Mundial de Tango GE", and in the Tango World Festival of Argentina. Nowadays she is dedicated to Tango Queer projects developing role interchange, exploring the roles as ying-yang expressions, while integrating other music genres. Most recently she was invited to teach and perform at the Queer Tango Festival in Miami.
