Tango Mercurio Code of Conduct

Tango Mercurio events are Safe Spaces. Attendees acknowledge that they will adhere to this Code of Conduct and embrace expected behaviors. Tango Mercurio values the health, safety, and well-being of all our participants and attendees. Our events are inclusive and respectful environments that foster a feeling of belonging. We rely on our attendees to prioritize the comfort and enjoyment of everyone around them, remembering that tango is best danced in an environment of openness and trust. We therefore expect that events will be free from harassment and disrespectful or inappropriate (verbal or non-verbal) behavior. Our events welcome all dancers.

To help ensure the best experience for all dancers, please follow these guidelines:

  • Be positive and respectful

  • Respect Argentine Tango étiquette (Check our FAQ about Argentine Tango étiquette)

    • Use mirada and cabeceo for identifying your next dance partner

[Note: Followers and leaders are not obligated to dance with anyone. You should feel free to respectfully decline a dance for any reason. If asked verbally, a “No, thank you” is polite. If you are resting, you can say, "Thank you, I'm sitting this one out," or "Maybe later.”]

    • Respect the decision not to dance with you; refrain from coercive or persistent invitations

    • Respect the entrance etiquette, flow, and lanes of the ronda

[Note: a brief “I am sorry” could help if you accidentally bumped into someone or held up the flow .]

    • Become aware of and respect the verbal and non-verbal communication of others. Recognize and protect the boundaries of others, both with your dance partner and the other couples on the dance floor.

[Note: Let your partner know if they are hurting you or if you don’t feel safe with any particular dance moves. Refrain from doing moves that may hurt you, your partner, and/or those around you.]

    • Do not engage in disrespectful, uninvited, or inappropriate touch on or off the dance floor

    • Do not dance in a way that endangers yourself, your partner, or others on the dance floor

  • Conduct all your interactions in an inclusive and non-discriminatory way. In particular, do not use threatening or discriminatory language and do not engage in any form of harassment*

  • Be aware that others may have different tolerance to certain scents.

Emphasize personal hygiene (e.g. taking a shower before dancing, fresh clothes etc..)

    • Where possible, please limit your use of strongly scented products such as perfumes, colognes, aftershaves, etc.

    • Bad breath can be reduced by brushing teeth/tongue and mints

    • Become aware of how your smell is perceived by asking for feedback

  • Refrain from following, stalking, or monopolizing other attendees

  • Refrain from abusing alcohol or other substances to the extent that would impair their ability to safely participate in the class/workshop/event and all its activities.

Tango Mercurio takes harassment very seriously and is committed to maintaining a safe and peaceful event. We will act promptly to address behavior that violates our code of conduct.
