The goal of this workshop is to help you unlock body awareness and give you insight into the core muscles we use for tango so that you can dance with more ease, balance, and comfort. We'll start by working with our feet - our roots - and see how important they are for balance. From there we'll investigate how the hips and pelvis relate to the feet, especially in walking, and finally we'll look at which core muscles we can use to create smooth and comfortable disassociation. I'll teach you several of the exercises I practice regularly and are easy to do at home.
Please have a mat (or something soft) to lie down on, and a towel handy.
Utha Callen has been dancing her whole life, but didn't find tango until 2013. After a back injury ended her dance career she turned to Gyrotonic to help her recover, and discovered that though she had been physically training her whole life, she knew almost nothing about how to use her body and had a lot less control over what muscles she was using than she thought. She spent the next several years studying Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis intensively and came out with a completely new level of body awareness and control, as well as a return to pain free life for the first time since her teens. She still studies, and has been teaching for almost a decade with the aim to help people understand their bodies better and move in a smarter, more connected way.
