Tango & Teamwork
/Step by Step - Leadership Lessons from the Dance Floor
Human interactions can make or break the success of projects, organizations, and even life stories. For professionals, excelling in their areas of technical expertise often comes naturally—but navigating the complex web of people and relationships? That’s where things can get tricky!
At the 2024 American Chemical Society LEADS Conference, Tango Mercurio Dance instructor Sarah Schlatterer, MD, PHD, led an out-of-the-box approach to this challenge. Sarah Schlatterer and her husband Joerg had the incredible honor of leading an experiential learning session titled “Improving Leadership and Followership Competencies: Step by Step.” More than 40 brilliant participants joined for an hour of fun, reflection, and discovery—using Argentine Tango basics as our model system for exploring essential skills like:
🌀 Mission-driven behavior
🌀 Owning and adapting to mistakes
🌀 Building trust and respecting differences
🌀 Navigating ambiguity with humor and resilience
🌀 And so much more!
The results? Participants gained fresh perspectives on self-awareness, decision-making, adaptability, and goal setting—all through the lens of dance. Who says leadership training can’t be fun?
